Bang Lang Dam was built to block the Pattani River as part of the first multi-purpose hydroelectric project in the south, according to the Pattani River Basin Development Plan. The construction was completed in May 1981 and is currently in the charge of the Electricity Generating Authority. In Thailand, it is characterized by a clay core rock dam, 85 meters high, 430 meters long, 10 meters wide and the base dam, 366 meters wide, capable of generating 72,000 kilowatts of electricity. The reservoir above the dam also provides irrigation benefits for the farmland of Yala and Pattani provinces, where the released water is used to generate electricity to supply people in the south for household and industrial use, to help mitigate flooding. In the lower part of the Pattani River Basin, as well as being an important freshwater fishery in the southern region.
